Help for Parents
Have you recently discovered your precious new child has a hearing issue? Maybe you have known for some time and you are still unsure how to help them the best. Professionals and medical personnel have probably asked you to make decisions, and you may be feeling pressured. We understand!
1
Start Using Simple Baby Signs
Sign Language is the KEY to building a strong language foundation for any Deaf/HOH child. The cool part is that it's FUN! All you need to do is start learning a few basic baby signs (even if your child is older) and use them on a daily basis. Use the signs you know with your child. Sign with other members of the house. Set a goal for your family to learn three or four new signs each week to help your child reach vocabulary standards prior to entering school.
2
Sign Language Resources
There are several great websites to learn sign language. A few of our favorites are listed below. It can also be of help to find any Deaf / ASL meet-ups in your area. You can check out these Facebook pages where parents with Deaf children support each other. These pages allow for networking and sharing experiences for parents.

Find Your Support Team
Early intervention programs and other organizations are available to help you with big decisions like which school your child will attend or what tools you want your child to use (hearing aids, cochlear implants, etc).
Ask your audiologist for local organizations.
If you reside in eastern North Carolina, please contact us and we will send you a list of resources in your area!
